Chemistry 20

Our Grade 11s kicked off Chemistry 20 with the Bubblegum Lab. The question: how much of a piece of gum is actually sugar? Students weighed their gum, chewed it (strictly for science), let it dry, and weighed it again to calculate the percentage of the original mass that was sugar. It's a simple lab, but there's real chemistry behind it. The sugar dissolving in saliva is a solution at work, and the lab builds habits students will rely on all year: precise measurement, careful data recording, and figuring out where error creeps in. A fun start to the semester, with plenty more on the way!

Grade 5 Art

Our Grade 5 class created mixed-media fall tree pictures in Art this week, combining watercolour painting, tempera painting, and construction paper quilling. Working with three materials in one piece means learning what each does best: watercolour for soft, blended backgrounds, tempera for bold colour, and quilling for texture that rises right off the page. Students also had to think about composition and how all the parts fit together. Giving kids time to create matters. Art is where they get to experiment, make choices, solve problems their own way, and take pride in something they made from start to finish. Those skills carry well beyond the art room. And the results look pretty great, too.

Foods

Our students also get to learn, and show off, their culinary skills in the Foods Lab we officially opened last year. This week's challenge was the classic French crêpe, which takes more skill than it looks: getting the batter thin enough, managing the heat, and working up the nerve for the flip. These two gentlemen may have ended up with more toppings than crêpe, but they did manage a tasty version of the French classic. We'll call it a creative interpretation.
