Celebrating Excellence: Abeera Wasif Named 2026 Loran Scholar

The Bassano School community is bursting with pride as we celebrate a truly historic achievement for one of our own. Abeera Wasif has been named a 2026 Loran Scholar, making her one of only 36 students selected from across Canada to receive this prestigious honour.

Chosen from a pool of more than 5,400 applicants, Abeera represents the top 0.6% of young leaders in the country. She is also one of only four recipients from the entire province of Alberta this year.

A Legacy of Leadership and Character

The Loran Award is widely recognised as Canada’s largest and most comprehensive undergraduate merit scholarship. Unlike many awards that focus solely on academic averages, the Loran Scholars Foundation looks for something deeper: "character, commitment to service, and leadership potential." They seek out students who have the courage to challenge the status quo and a genuine desire to improve the lives of others. This describes Abeera perfectly.

A Journey of Perseverance

Abeera’s journey to this moment is a testament to her extraordinary perseverance and dedication. Since arriving at Bassano School in Grade 9—after moving from Pakistan and later Fort McMurray—she has been a constant force for positive change.

  • Environmental Advocacy: Formed the school’s Environmental Club.

  • Provincial Voice: Served on the Alberta Minister’s Youth Council on Education.

  • Community Support: Consistently advocated for rural communities and amplified the voices of her peers.

Redefining Student Leadership

At Bassano School, we have had a front-row seat to her growth. As the President of the Student Representative Council (SRC), Abeera didn't just organise events like pancake breakfasts and spirit weeks; she redefined what student leadership looks like.

She took an inclusive approach to every activity, making it her mission to meet students from every grade level to ensure everyone felt like they belonged. She has been open about the challenges of school life, using her own experiences to build a community that is supportive and fun for everyone.

Academic Excellence and Future Aspirations

Her academic and extracurricular resume is equally stunning.

  • Scientific Research: Last year, she participated in the WISEST Summer Research Program at the University of Alberta, where she conducted advanced research on lung cancer cells.

  • Passion for Medicine: Fueled by her awareness of doctor shortages in rural towns like Bassano, Abeera is now set to attend the University of Calgary in the Biomedical Sciences program.

The Loran Award Investment

The Loran Award provides Abeera with more than just financial support; it is a four-year "leadership-enrichment program." The award, valued at approximately $100,000, includes:

  • An annual stipend and tuition waivers at partner universities.

  • Mentorship from business and community leaders.

  • Funding for summer experiential learning.

This investment will allow Abeera to continue her journey of "self-discovery, inspiration, challenge, and transformation."
